We accept donations of lightly used items in our thrift store. It’s one of the things we do. Proceeds go towards supporting aaalllllll the other things we do.

Within these walls and the streets surrounding Gladys Avenue, our team is hard at work meeting practical needs, bringing hope, and restoring dignity to our neighbours struggling with homelessness, hunger, addiction and poverty.

The meal centre, staffed by chefs and a whole host of volunteers, serves almost 100,000 healthy plates, free of charge each year to our community.

The shelter provides almost 12,000 nights out of the elements each year to those needing a bed.

Family Services and outreach workers work in concert with public services to find long-term housing, provide food hampers, recovery support, and a whole host of other amenities to those in complicated situations.

Pantry34 provides over 5000 healthy snacks each year to students in the district , at school, who need support.

The medical clinic saw almost 2000 patients last year.

Our Next Step program provides longer-term housing and recovery support for about 15 individuals getting their lives back on track each year, including group meetings, one-on-one counselling and spiritual care.

Every time you donate, volunteer, sponsor an event, or a kettle, or a recovering addict. Every time you man a kettle station at Christmas for 2 hours by ringing a bell and smiling at passersby. Every time you drop off quality goods or make a purchase from the thrift store. Every time you come alongside The Salvation Army, you’re coming alongside some of the most vulnerable in our community and joining us in bringing hope.

#InternationalDayofCharity is held on the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, as a tribute to her dedication to those in need in our world.

In 2023, The Centre of Hope on Gladys Avenue right here in Abbotsford, continued that work by providing

- more than 90,000 meals to hungry people in our community
- almost 12,000 nights in a warm comfy bed for people experiencing homelessness
- over 1800 treatments at our on-site medical clinic
- almost 6000 healthy snacks for students in 28 local schools

Along with countless outreach visits to those in distress on our streets, referrals to detox, recovery and second stage housing, help with groceries, school supplies, a warm drink, a place to cool down, and sometimes just someone to talk to.

It’s true! Study after study has shown that volunteering has significant positive effects for increasing social, mental and physical health. Helping others helps us. And if that’s not quite enough - get this: helping others helps others too. It gives hope to those in our communities struggling with food insecurity, addiction, mental health, loneliness, and homelessness.

When you volunteer with local community organizations such as The Salvation Army, you allow more resources to flow directly to helping those in need right here in Abbotsford and Mission.

Did somebody say “Back-to-School”?

Our annual Back-to-School partnership with the School District, the Food Bank, and so many more was a blast and a huge success, as we handed out over 1000 hotdogs, drinks, donuts, and chips from one of our EDS trucks to families who were receiving backpacks, school supplies, and groceries to support them as a new school year begins.

A huuuuge thanks to all the amazing volunteers and community partners who made this day possible.

At the end of August each year we’re honoured to participate in two amazing events helping families afford to go back-to-school in Abbotsford.

Today - we’ll hand out over 150 backpacks filled with supplies and host families from Abbotsford and Mission at Cascade Church for a barbecue.

This event is supported by a grant from the Abbotsford Community Foundation’s Smart & Caring Community Fund. @abbotsfordcommunityfoundation we’re so grateful!

And then next Wednesday, we’re excited to Support the 6th Annual @abbotsfordsd Back-to-School Event at Abby Senior Secondary by bringing out our EDS vehicles, staff, and volunteers to provide a barbecue for families being supported through this amazing event.

August 17th is National Thrift Shop Day, which celebrates the many benefits of shopping at local thrift stores.

When you donate to, or purchase from a local non-profit thrift store such as The Salvation Army, MCC, Life Recovery, Bibles for Missions, and many others, you not only fuel the circular economy in our communities that helps keep items in use longer and out of landfills, you also support these organizations performing vital services in your own neighbourhood, such as housing, food security, addiction recovery, medical aid, job training and so much more.

Our friends over at @hub_intl just wrapped up their ‘Christmas in July’ initiative at three of their branches, and donated the proceeds to The Salvation Army’s work supporting vulnerable individuals right here in Abbotsford and Mission.

It’s always a blast seeing our campers off to Camp Sunrise each Summer! Camp can be a formative experience in young lives and we’re so grateful for our community partners who are making this week happen for 45 excited kids this year.

They started yesterday morning with breakfast at Cascade Community Church provided by our friends at the McCallum Junction McDonalds, games in the gym, a bus ride down to Horseshoe Bay, pizza lunch and games in the park and finally a ferry ride over to @camp_sunrise where they’ll make friends, develop skills, and enjoy all manner of activities this week!

Have you noticed it’s a little toasty these days? We hope you’re enjoying a dip in the pool, a cold tasty treat, and the comfort of air conditioning whenever you can.

The reality for many in our community, and especially those we serve through our shelter and outreach teams is that these amenities aren’t readily available.

Help us bring hope during the Summer heat by dropping off any of these much needed items at the Centre of Hope on Gladys Avenue, and by sharing this post with others:

The Meal Centre is a hub of life here on Gladys Av

The Meal Centre is a hub of life here on Gladys Avenue, providing 300 nutritious meals per day seven days a week to anyone that’s hungry.

A team of 6-7 volunteers each day assist our professional chefs with sorting, serving, cooking and clean-up, and each morning our driver volunteers report to various business in town to collect surplus baked goods, produce and broken cases.

September 24th marked 38 years of Dao Tran's immigration to Canada. He gives back to many organizations in the community through his volunteerism. Dao and his family who own @abbybikeshop have supported #TheSalvationArmy for many years. Dao presented a $5,000 cheque to Kim Hissink, Fundraising Coordinator #thesalvationarmycentreofhope to help offset the costs of the Community Thanksgiving Luncheon planned for October 5th.
